FSM: Frequency Specific Microcurrent

From its beginnings at the turn of the last century, the new renaissance in Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is rapidly spreading to all fields of medicine, and I am eager to share insights I have learned from becoming a practitioner of this amazing technology.


Decades ago, before the transformative events of the two World Wars, FSM devices were a staple in the practices of chiropractors, osteopaths, pharmacists, and even dentists. However, the landscape shifted dramatically following the Flexner Report in 1910, a highly influential document that heavily favoured only the twin allopathic disciplines of surgery and pharmaceutical-based medicines. Consequently, these beneficial machines were cast aside, often relegated to dusty storerooms or discarded completely. Practitioners faced the real threat of losing their licenses if they continued using them. While FSM is available to us again today, regulatory restrictions mean that practitioners are limited to making claims solely regarding pain relief.

FSM shares some similarities with TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) technology, as both utilize electrodes to deliver electrical frequencies into the body. The critical distinction, however, lies in the magnitude of the current. FSM uses a current that is a thousand times weaker than that of a TENS machine. Practitioners understand that this minuscule current—a true microcurrent—is imperceptible to the patient because it mirrors the electrical currents naturally occurring within the human body. Our nervous system relies on microcurrents to transmit signals, and cellular mechanisms use intrinsic microcurrents to open and close voltage-gated channels in cell membranes. Because it aligns so closely with the body's natural state, this microcurrent passes through tissues effortlessly without causing adverse reactions. When this current is programmed with specific frequencies, the body can resonate with them. Depending on the frequency used, this resonance can lead to reduced inflammation and pain, accelerated repair of strained tendons, elimination of harmful bacteria, dissolution of scar tissue, and even the release of deep-seated emotional trauma stored within the tissues.


The resurgence of FSM in modern clinical practice is largely credited to the pioneering efforts of Dr. Carolyn McMakin, an American chiropractor. Her journey began when she acquired a chiropractic clinic. As Dr. McMakin began her practice, the retired chiropractor served as her mentor. On one occasion, she encountered a particularly challenging case where her manual treatments were inadvertently exacerbating a patient's pain. Desperate for a solution, she called her mentor, who instructed her to use an FSM machine that he had bequeathed to her practice, set specific frequencies on Channels A and B, and apply the electrodes to the patient.


Though somewhat skeptical, she followed his instructions and watched in astonishment as the patient, previously in significant distress, relaxed completely and soon reported being entirely free of pain.


Following this remarkable experience, she contacted her mentor to ask, "What exactly did you have me do?" He explained the nature of the FSM device, noting that he had inherited a list of frequencies from Harry Van Gelder, the man who had worked with him in the 1980s. The list was originally compiled around 1922. That pivotal moment forever altered the trajectory of Dr. McMakin's career.


From 1996, Dr. McMakin began treating patients with FSM, initially relying on the frequencies from the list. After teaching these frequencies and treatment protocols to verify their reproducibility, she presented her findings at the National Meeting of the American Back Society and published her initial case studies. This was followed by a peer-reviewed study involving mice, which were treated with 40Hz on Channel A (a frequency targeting inflammation) and 116Hz on Channel B (targeting the immune system). The results demonstrated a significant, reproducible reduction in inflammation. The dual-channel system works synergistically: Channel A addresses the specific condition, while Channel B targets the specific tissue or organ. Every tissue in the body resonates with a unique frequency. While legal constraints prevent making definitive medical claims, it is clear that these frequencies effectively reduce inflammation and, consequently, pain. There is a desperate need for further funded studies, though large corporations that typically finance medical research show little interest in FSM technology.


In 1999, Dr. McMakin made another significant discovery: a specific frequency protocol capable of eliminating the widespread, full-body pain of fibromyalgia associated with spinal trauma in just sixty minutes, with highly reproducible results. Today, Dr. McMakin continues to present case studies and conduct seminars, empowering practitioners worldwide to assist their clients using this technology.


I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been trained directly by Dr. Carolyn McMakin. Now in her late seventies, she remains actively involved in teaching FSM courses. It is crucial to seek treatment from a properly trained practitioner, as these devices are not suitable for untrained use. Applying the incorrect frequency at the wrong time can potentially cause harm. For instance, while FSM can effectively dissolve scar tissue from old injuries, this should never be attempted within the first six weeks of a new injury, as scar tissue serves a vital protective purpose during the initial healing phase.


Beyond its efficacy in treating musculoskeletal issues—such as back, knee, and shoulder pain—and providing substantial relief for fibromyalgia and nerve pain like peripheral neuropathy, FSM has also proven highly successful in trauma release.

Within the FSM community, it is well understood that all trauma, regardless of its magnitude, impacts the medulla in the brainstem. This, in turn, affects the vagus nerve, which originates in the medulla and innervates many organs and bodily systems. The vagus nerve—named for its "vagrant" or wandering path from the medulla to the lungs, heart, stomach, and intestines—relays critical information from these systems back to the brain. This allows the medulla to signal the pituitary gland to make necessary hormonal adjustments to maintain homeostasis.

When the body experiences trauma—whether it’s a major life event like the death of a loved one, a divorce, or job loss, or a seemingly minor incident like a near-miss traffic accident—it can subtly affect the medulla, leading to mild inflammation. This inflammation acts like static on a telephone line, scrambling the messages sent by the vagus nerve. When these signals are disrupted, it can negatively impact various bodily functions, including digestion and sleep quality.


One of the foundational protocols utilized by FSM practitioners when beginning treatment with a new client is known as the Concussion Protocol. This specific program is designed to address this subtle inflammation, soothe the vagus nerve, and bring the body's system "back online." This protocol was developed by Harry Van Gelder, the practitioner I mentioned earlier in this post. Van Gelder, who immigrated to America from England in 1946, was a remarkably skilled individual—an osteopath, naturopath, homeopath, and medical clairvoyant. His clairvoyant abilities were particularly significant, as they allowed him to visually observe the direct effects of various frequencies on his clients' energetic fields and physical systems. Through extensive experimentation, he developed the Concussion Protocol that remains widely used today.


In my own practice, I consistently observe that the Concussion Protocol induces profound relaxation in clients. They frequently describe feeling "floaty" and often fall asleep during the treatment. This is an excellent indicator that the body has shifted into a parasympathetic ("rest and digest") state. Following the session, clients commonly report enhanced sleep quality, improved digestion, and an overall elevated sense of well-being. It is standard practice to administer the Concussion Protocol before introducing any other targeted programs. Because everyone carries accumulated traumas simply from navigating life, it is essential to guide the body into a state of profound peace—even if only for thirty minutes—to ensure it is fully receptive to subsequent frequencies. Healing of any kind is significantly hindered if the body remains in a low-level sympathetic ("fight or flight") state; a fundamental sense of safety is a prerequisite for true healing.
